Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) today hosted a workshop on developing a culture of intrapreneurship as part of the pre-conference events for the 20th NHRD National Conference. NHRD, is the premier organization for Human Resource Professionals in India. The 28 year old organization will be holding it’s Annual Conference for members in Bangalore on the 8th and 9th of Dec 2016.
Today’s workshop was conducted by Prof Sunil Shukla, Director of Entrepreneurship Development Institute, Ahmedabad. The day began with a talk about the essence of entrepreneurship where Prof Shukla spoke about the crux of being an entrepreneur. This was followed by a presentation on the risks an entrepreneur faces and how he can mitigate them. The morning session ended with Prof Shukla detailing the entrepreneurial journeys of successful Indian entrepreneurs like N.R. Panicker of Accel Frontline Pvt Ltd, N.R. Narayan Murthy Of Infosys and R Chenraj Jain of Jain Group Of Institutions.
Unlike Mr Murthy and Mr Panicker who are founders of publicly traded companies , Mr Chenraj Jain presents a compelling entrepreneurial journey that few have heard of. He started his career as a salesman earning Rs 50 per month at Bombay Dyeing. After a few months he quit his job to start an educational institute in 1993 with just 16 students and the rest as they say is history. Today, the Jain Group Of Institutions headquartered in Bangalore has more than 28,000 students enrolled across the country and reported a turnover in excess of Rs 450 Crore from it’s educational ventures. The organization has also gained a name for it’s philanthropic work targeted at the economically backward segments of society.
The afternoon session saw animated discussions on case studies pertaining to issues faced while pursuing the entrepreneurial path within organizations. The lunch session was followed by a simulation exercise and ended with an assignment that participants will have to complete at home. The workshop also has dedicated sessions on how to create and sustain a culture of intrapreneurship within organizations.
