Sena corporators managed to push the proposal through with support from coalition partner BJP despite allegations that the scheme was designed to favour a select few of the party’s loyal workforce. The Congress had proposed selling kaanda poha to counter the Sena move, but it was not accepted by the improvements committee. Civic chief Jairaj Phatak had also moved a proposal to allot 66 carts for vada pav and 59 for kaanda poha. However, it did not come up for discussion.
By May 1, vendors will swarm city streets with handcarts selling vada pavs. Officials propose to set up 215 Annadata Aahar Kendras and give out 125 handcarts to vendors. It is designed on the lines of the Zunka Bhakar Kendras, which ran into trouble in 2002 following an apex court order.
