About Internet.org Innovation Challenge in India
A recent study on Internet Trends published last year by McKinsey revealed that one of the biggest barriers to adoption of the Internet is the lack of multilingual content and services that caters to the need of the different segments of India’s diverse population. The Internet is a very highly anglicized medium with English being the de fact language in which content is published, while the majority of the world’s population do not speak English.
To change this situation , Tech Corporations, Governments, NGO’s and Individuals have come together on the Internet.org foundation. The Innovation Challenge in India seeks to recognize those companies and individuals who are trying to realize this vision of trying to connect excluded communities to the Internet.
The contest lays special emphasis is on connecting 4 under-served sections of India’s population.
As these communities face multiple barriers in accessing the Internet in large parts of the country, Internet.org seeks to recognize and empower those individuals, companies who have started websites, apps and services aimed at this population.
